Happy Holidays from all of us at Crytivo! It’s been another incredible year of triumphs, lessons learned, and growth. Thank you for always taking the time to interact with the dev team, try out new updates, and give us your opinions. What we really want to say is, thanks for being the greatest community around! Seeing you smile is the only gift we need, which is why we want to share a few of the exciting things coming to The Universim in 2018. Read on!

We’re in the Medieval Era!
Woah, what exactly does that mean?

Prepare to immerse yourself in a world filled with danger and the smell of wood. We had quite the little adventure developing the Stone Age, didn’t we? Well, the good news is that the Stone Age contains around 95% of the core mechanics we require to build the rest of the game, like planet generation, planet simulation (seasons, climates, etc), major AI systems, and pretty much everything else. Alright, fasten your seatbelts! We’re jumping to hyperspeed aboard the Crytivo Bathtub, and we’re probably going to lose some Nuggets. That’s okay, though. They’re designed to die either way.

There’s quite a bit on its way! While you were busy playing with your Nuggets, we were hard at work at Crytivo Labs developing the new Residential Block system. Most of our scientists  engineers have no idea how it works, but we’ll try to explain it to you anyway.

We developed a system that sneakily creates Residential Blocks behind the scenes. This system reserves space for the buildings of the future. Nuggets discover new technologies and research extraordinary things all the time. These discoveries often alter their very lives, either on a molecular level or in regards to the effects that certain upgrades have on the operational and visual aspects of the civilization. The Residential Block system (RB) reserves space around buildings dynamically each time a Nugget decides to break out their trusty hammer. To spice things up a bit, the system also places a plethora of pleasing props around the block to beautify the entire area. The system also dynamically connects each RB and the buildings inside of them to the road network, which ensures Nuggets find their way around easily. Well, at least we hope they will. They have a mind of their own, that lot.

The Stone Age primarily used buildings that were pre-designed by our amazing artists. In the Medieval Era, we’re trying something a little different. The Prometheus system has been reading up on how to build houses out of a number of modular components. It’s amazing what you can learn from a few books! This means that every residential building will have its own unique look, while maintaining the handcrafted look and feel you’ve come to know. This is an enormously complex system, and we hope you enjoy the new look.

A lot of love and attention to detail went into creating the wildlife that now roams the planet, from their visual designs to their respective behaviors. They are so close to being completed. We guess that means it’s about time to start hunting them, right? Hunting and wild animal attacks on the village are two new additions to the game coming soon. Fair warning, it’s going to be brutal. You’ve seen what horrors befall unsuspecting Nuggets every day. Mother nature isn’t calming down anytime soon.

Don’t play with fire! We’re bringing the heat to the Medieval Era. This isn’t the same old familiar fire that Nuggets can control. This is wildfire, uncontrollable and unpredictable. You have the power to start it, but it decides where to go. You can burn everything to the ground, especially if you’re particularly upset about something your Nuggets have done. Like one of our friends said some time ago:

The path of the righteous Nugget is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil Nuggets. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Creator when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Oh, and wind; wind will control how fast and which direction fire spreads.

More often than not, you’ll see Nuggets researching new buildings that will help automate certain parts of their daily routines. Nuggets will eventually start relying more on kinetic energy - they will discover that wind can generate electricity and that fire will keep them warm during winter. A huge amount of new research perks are also making their way into the new era, like one that increases the amount of resources that can be carried and the speed at which Couriers deliver resources. You’ll feel the very planet shaking from the pace at which Nuggets are shipping resources around. New resources like Gas, Oil, Metal, and Stone are also being added to the bowels of Mother Planet for future use.

The Medieval Era also marks the dawn of curiosity. Nuggets have begun questioning not only what’s in front of their noses (which they apparently lack), but what’s above their heads as well. Our team has started production on (drum roll) ALIEN PLANETS! Oh my, this is going to be amazing! You can begin viewing distant planets where you can one day send innocent Nuggets to die as a result of radiation, a lack of oxygen, extreme temperatures, and, of course, alien flora and fauna. What fun!

Tell Nuggets to pack a bag and stroll headlong into the unknown! Give them the opportunity to uncover the wonders of Mother Planet. Certain valuable discoveries periodically fall from space while others have been hanging around since ancient times. What a great time to discover the endless gifts of the universe! Be sure to stock your Expedition with enough resources to get them there and back again. Surviving the wilderness is no easy feat.

We’re not going into too much detail here, as we don’t want to spoil the surprise, but there is something really cool coming soon.
We’ve been updating this roadmap here for quite some time, and most of you guys and gals probably haven’t noticed yet. Well, this is your reminder.

We’re planning on releasing the game on Steam as soon as we have most of the functionality listed above ready. We are super excited about the Steam release, and we would like to thank the 270,000 fans who have added The Universim to their Wishlist. Haven’t added us yet? What a shame! But hey, it’s never too late. Add The Universim to your Wishlist

Let’s go off topic for a bit:
We are planning on launching something massive over at www.Crytivo.com in 15 days. Don’t miss out! Sign up to the news updates and share that page with your friends and family. We’re going to be fighting the good fight against anti-consumer business practices in the industry, and we will be needing your love and support! We’ve got a number of great indie developers backing us as well. Save the date!

Speaking of great indie developers, we recommend checking out an incredible project by the name of Prehistoric Kingdom that’s heading into its final stages on Kickstarter. You can build your own Prehistoric Zoo in the style of beloved old tycoon games! We’re talking extinct animals of all kinds, and you even have the ability to take control of a ranger and stroll around. Imagine pulling a T-Rex’s tail. What a rush. Let’s help them hit their goal! Support them here

We hope you enjoyed the update, and we would love to know if there is anything else you think we should add to the Medieval Era. The list of features is never final; you always have a say. Let us know in the comments! Remember to share The Universim with your friends and family, especially with the game shifting into overdrive.

Oh, and one last thing. Happy Holidays once more, and here’s to a brilliant year in 2018!

All the best,
The Crytivo Crew & Santa Claus!
